Sunday Snippets - 10th July 2016

The past week has been pretty up and down. I’m still struggling a lot with my mental health, and I’ve felt incredibly wiped out and run down, which isn’t much fun. But there have been a couple of nice things too, which have helped to break things up. I’m sitting here feeling extra tired and achey (and with a rather sunburnt face) after spending the weekend in the New Forest, but more of that in a bit.

Last Sunday I decided to go to church with my Mum and Dad in the morning. I don’t go that often any more if I’m honest. I just find it very hard to connect to it at the moment, and feel a bit out of place. Plus I’ve been feeling super tired, which always makes it difficult. When we got home I sorted out my medications for the next week, which takes a fair while! I spent a lot of the afternoon editing some photos and getting a blog post up. I also opened an amazing box from Bear Hugs Gifts and took lots of photos for a future blog post, which I’m excited to share with you. And I opened a gorgeous little parcel from my friend Lissa, who was very kind and sent me a few bits, including this adorable cat tape! In the evening David and Emma came over. We watched the video I made of Emma’s Hen party (which you can find over on my YouTube) and then had a BBQ.

These pretty colouring pencils were one of the items that game in my Bear Hugs box. Don’t you just love all the colours.

On Monday, Rosiie decided to do a little photo shoot with Freddie – he’s such a poser!

I woke up fairly late on Monday morning and still felt very tired. Thankfully I had no plans, so was just able to have a quiet day. I spent the morning editing photos and writing a blog post, which I’ve been meaning to put up for a couple of weeks. We’ve been having our lounge completely redecorated, so in the afternoon I had to try and make myself comfy in our kitchen (it’s kind of a family room, so we have an area with a sofa and chairs, but they’re not as comfy as the lounge!) I watched a load of YouTube videos from Chloe Murray, Becca Rose, The Michalaks and Fayes Fix and caught up on some of my blog e-mails. Freddie was being his usual cute self and got his fleece liner out of his crate and snuggled under it on the sofa! I was expecting the mental health lady to ring me back but she didn’t, so my anxiety was even higher than it was over the weekend.

Tuesday morning I got up fairly late feeling so exhausted. I struggled to motivate myself to do anything, so ended up procrastinating for quite a while. I finally managed to force myself to do some video editing, and actually edited two and a half videos and uploaded one to my YouTube channel. I had planned to write some letters in the afternoon, but got distracted for quite a while so it didn’t happen. I did go and sit out on the decking in our garden for a while, which was nice and really quiet. Just what I needed. I spent the rest of the afternoon replying to Facebook messages, as I had a lot of admin ones from the groups I manage.

On Wednesday I got up pretty late again and had a very quiet morning. I didn’t really feel up to doing much, but I did manage to sort through one small draw of clothes, which I guess is something. My Dad took me over to Farnham Hospital and I saw my Urologist. He said that I have three options for moving forwards: continue self-catheterising as I currently am, have Botox to see if it will relax things enough that I don’t have to self-catheterise or to see a London specialist about having an electrical stimulation device implanted near my spine. We decided that I will try the Botox first, and then if that doesn’t work I’ll be referred to the specialist. He also said that scarring on the kidney is causing the pain around my right kidney. Unfortunately, the only way to solve it is to remove my kidney, which is obviously pretty serious stuff, so we’re going to watch and wait for now and see if it gets worse. When I got home I wrote a few letters. I also received some exciting things in the post.

Thursday morning I had a phone call first thing, so didn’t get up too late. I then managed to do a bit of video editing, so I have a couple of videos ready to upload to my YouTube. The person I spoke to on the phone wanted to have a Skype chat, so she rang around lunchtime and we discussed a possible project I might be involved with in the coming months. After resting for a while, my Dad took me over to the Pain Clinic for my appointment with the consultant. He told me my two options for moving forward are either Gabapentin or pain patches, so I’m going to give Gabapentin a try. I’m not looking forward to it after having a bad experience with Pregabalin, which is in the same family of drugs, but I need to say I’ve at least tried it before we consider patches. Hopefully an appointment for my injections will come through soon, and he also said he would do the injections in my abdomen that my Professor requested. He commented that I seemed very down compared to our last appointment. It was kind of a relief for him to actually notice if I’m honest, even if he couldn’t offer any help. I managed to start a new book from Zoe Sugg (Zoella) while we were waiting for my appointment.

I felt pretty rough when I woke up on Friday morning, but I knew I had a commitment so forced myself to get up and dressed. My Dad drove me over to Uni and we met a couple of people from my course. I then went to a meeting to chat to a team of people who are helping to revalidate the course. It was quite interesting and they gave us some good advice. We also got given our finished newspaper that we were putting together last term. I rested for a while when I got home, as I was pretty worn out from it all. My Mum and I did some baking in the afternoon, and Emma popped over after work, which was nice. I felt more and more unwell as the day went on, so was feeling pretty anxious about whether I would get through the busy weekend.

Yesterday morning we were all up bright and early for the start of Lisa’s Hen weekend. My Mum, two sisters, Emma and I took two cars down to the New Forest, meeting the rest of the hens and Lisa at a waterpark. Thankfully the sun was shining and there was a bit of a breeze. Most of the girls spent an hour out on the lake doing paddle boarding and kayaking, but my Mum, Lisa’s Mum, one of her friends and I sat out on the terrace with a drink and watched. Once everyone was back on dry land and out of their wetsuits, we set off for a picnic area deep in the New Forest. We were surrounded by gorgeous New Forest ponies, and had the most lovely afternoon tea, all set up at tables with white tablecloths, flowers and real china. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much cake! It got quite windy, but that didn’t spoil it thankfully. After we’d eaten, we spent some time playing games like Mr and Mrs, charades and telling embarrassing stories. At around 4pm, we packed everything up and got back in our cars to head to our final destination, Burley. It wasn’t far, and we arrived to find a little field with big bell tents, where we would spend the night glamping. Our first task was to decorate our tents with bunting, pretty bedding and fairy lights – they looked awesome if I do say so myself! We then relaxed with cups of tea and a few more games, before lighting the BBQ and cracking open the Prosecco. The evening finished with us toasting marshmallows on the fire and some of the girls having a wheelbarrow race (as you do!)

If you haven’t read my blog before, I just wanted to let you know that I have a second blog, which mainly focuses on my health in more depth than I talk about it here. It’s largely for friends and family to follow and keep up with what’s going on, but if it’s something you would be interested in reading as well, you are more than welcome to follow me over there. It’s called ‘Zebra Crossing’ and you can find it by clicking here. I’m trying to keep it updated fairly regularly, so hopefully there will be something there for you to read!

You can also check out my YouTube channel here, where I have recently uploaded a few new videos (and hope to continue doing!)

I’m also trying to post on Snapchat a bit more, so if you fancy following me, my username is Jennycole44.

What have you been up to this week? I always enjoy hearing about your news and adventures!

Festival Place Eat Street Weekend

I’ve been meaning to write this post for a few weeks now, but what with family weddings and my health being rubbish it just hasn’t happened. So, I apologise this is now rather late, but hopefully you’ll still enjoy hearing all about it.

On Saturday 11th June, my Mum and I made our way to Festival Place, Basingstoke, for their annual Eat Street event. This was its fourth year, although I don’t think I’ve actually managed to go before, so I was excited to see what it was all about. But the thing I was most looking forward to was seeing Nadiya Hussain (of Great British Bake Off fame), the event’s special guest this year.

We arrived in plenty of time and stationed ourselves at the front, with perfect views of the kitchen area where Nadiya would be doing her cooking demonstrations. After being introduced, Nadiya set to work on making a few dishes from her brand new book, whilst chatting about her experiences of the Bake Off and making The Queen’s 90th birthday cake. The dishes she made (including both savoury and sweet options) smelt and looked absolutely incredible and I’m especially excited to try making the macaroons!

Nadiya was just as warm and friendly in person as she was on the Bake Off, and I was very lucky to be able to meet her and have my book signed. As well as her new book, Nadiya’s Kitchen, which is on sale now, Nadiya also has big plans for the next couple of years. She has a children’s book coming out in September, which is set to be a collaboration of recipes and children’s stories. As an adult with no children, even I’m quite excited to see what it’s like, as from what Nadiya told us about it, it sounds great! Then, next summer, Nadiya will be back on our TV in a two-part cooking show, which will see her travel to Bangladesh to cook meals from her childhood.

After meeting Nadiya, we had a wander round the rest of the event to see what was on offer. There were numerous tasting stations from Festival Place’s wide range of restaurants and cafés, including samples from Giraffe, GBK, Nando’s, Starbucks, gluten free dough balls from Pizza Express, Yaki Soba noodles from Wagamama and a range of foods from the Marks and Spencer Patrons’ Lunch menu. There were also visits from fun food stilt act ‘Hungry Chefs’ and the Nando’s and Giraffe mascots, who were walking around the crowds and joining in the food activities.

Festival Place centre Director, Steven Connolly said: “We were thrilled to bring Eat Street back for a fourth year and we couldn’t be happier with the feedback from the customers and retailers alike. It was great to have the wonderful Nadiya involved as well as so many of our retailers.”

Although it was pretty crowded and I found it a bit overwhelming, overall it was a really good day. I particularly enjoyed meeting Nadiya and hearing her talk about her experiences on the Bake Off, and was chuffed to get my signed copy of her new book. I’m excited to start cooking, although I doubt my meals will look quite as good as hers do!

Festival Place is now busy preparing for their exciting programme of summer activities. Kicking off on the 21st July, with the return of their famous summer garden, the events will feature a variety of family friendly fun with meet and greets from some of the most popular children’s TV characters. To find out more and stay up-to-date with their summer events and other activities, please check out the Festival Place website or find them on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.

Did you attend the Festival Place Eat Street event, or a similar one near you? What do you think of Nadiya’s new cookbook?

Sunday Snippets - 3rd July 2016

The last week hasn’t been too great unfortunately. My mental health seems to be rapidly deteriorating, which feels pretty scary, especially when I have to fight incredibly hard to get any sort of professional help and support. The worse my mental health gets, the harder it is to find the motivation inside of me to keep fighting. It’s also making my physical health problems more difficult to deal with, and sends my fatigue levels through the roof. I’ve tried to find things to distract myself with, but am finding it quite hard to concentrate on activities (which is why I’m sitting here on Sunday afternoon, still trying to write this post!) I get frustrated with myself, because I have so many ideas and plans for my blog and YouTube channel, but just can’t seem to make them happen, either because of my physical or mental health. I end up comparing myself to other bloggers/YouTubers a lot, and feel pretty inadequate a lot of the time. I do know I try my best with what I’m doing, but sometimes it just doesn’t feel like enough.

Last Sunday I had quite a slow morning, as I wasn’t feeling great. After sorting out my medications for the week ahead, I spent the rest of the morning watching episodes of The Simpsons and doing some blogging. I then spent the afternoon resting on the sofa, watching YouTube videos (I’ve recently discovered The Michalaks and am loving them!) and replying to some Facebook messages. In the evening we went to a local Italian restaurant and met lots of our extended family for a meal to celebrate my Dad’s birthday. It was a long evening and I was shattered by the time we got home, but it was lovely to spend some time together. My Dad opened a few more presents and then I called it a night.

The peonies I bought earlier in the week had really opened up. Don’t they look beautiful! It’s such a shame they are only around for a short period of time.

I found it very difficult to find a happy photo for Monday if I’m completely honest. In the morning I went to have my hair cut, which was nice but completely wiped me out. So, when I got home I rested on the sofa and watched some TV. My GP rang around lunchtime and our conversation left me feeling pretty gutted. I won’t go into it all here, but I don’t think I’ve ever felt so isolated and alone with the things going on inside my head. I spent most of the afternoon breaking down in tears. Every time I managed to calm down, more bad thoughts came and I broke down again. The only thing that brought some comfort was Freddie cuddling me.

Tuesday morning I woke up feeling rather rubbish after a pretty awful night, which wasn’t unexpected after my bad day. I went for a massage in the morning, which was much needed but I wish it had lasted longer! I’ve got so many knots and tender areas at the moment though that I don’t think a day would be long enough to sort me out! I came home and rested for a bit, and then my Mum took me over to Aldershot to see my urology nurse. She was pleased that the self-catheterising is going well and invited me to an open day in September, where I can meet with different companies and try some different products. I had hoped to be a bit more productive when I came home, but just felt physically and mentally crap, so ended up resting. My sister gave me these carnations on Monday, as she saw how sad I was and wanted to cheer me up, which was sweet. They look very pretty on our kitchen windowsill.

On Wednesday morning I had to be up really early for a hospital appointment. My Dad took me over to the Pain Clinic for a follow-up group from the pain management course. The timings were all messed up, which made things quite stressful. And I found it very hard to be open about how much I’m struggling. I don’t know, I hoped there might be an offer of more help or support, but that was it. I left feeling more alone than when I arrived. I fell asleep for a while when I got home. In the afternoon I managed to distract myself by writing a few letters to my penpals on this cute writing paper. I’ve been finding it incredibly hard to find things to eat for dinner recently (breakfast and lunch aren’t too bad, as I have homemade muesli and a Fortisip). I don’t have much appetite, everything I eat makes me unwell and I just don’t have the energy or motivation to cook anything. Trying to cope with an eating disorder and serious digestive illnesses is just getting harder and harder.

Thursday was a bit of a mixed day and my head felt all over the place. I woke up not feeling great and kept bursting into tears. I ended up posting something on Twitter and tagging my local mental health team. It wasn’t my best idea, but I’m at the end of my tether, so thought I had nothing to lose by being honest. I managed to do a bit of video editing during the morning, then spent some of the afternoon resting. My Mum took me down to the chemist so I could speak to the pharmacist, as I had an eye infection. When I got home my Dad told me the mental health team had rung after seeing my Tweet, so I had to ring them back. The lady was very nice and listened to me cry and tell her what’s going on/how low I’m feeling. She said she would speak to my old psychiatrist and get back to me. I’m not getting my hopes up though, as I can’t see them changing their mind about helping me, especially after they’ve already been rung by several other medical professionals and said no. In the evening my Dad and I went to the cinema to see the Absolutely Fabulous movie, as I’d won tickets to the preview. It was very funny and a good distraction. We then went to Jamie’s Italian for a bit of dinner.

When we were at Jamie’s Italian, I popped to the loo and noticed the tap looked like a smiley face. With how I’m feeling at the moment, it made me smile a bit, so I thought I’d take a picture. I thought I might start a new little project where, if I see something that looks like a smiley face, I’ll take a photo and upload it on my social media using the hashtag #jenssmileproject – A bit random I know, but it’s another way to look for things that make me smile, and hopefully they might make others smile too.

I got up pretty late on Friday morning, as I felt quite tired after Thursday. I managed to finish editing the video I’m making of Emma’s Hen Party, so I’m excited for her to see it. In the afternoon I caught up on some YouTube videos and replied to some e-mails. I still have loads of blog e-mails to read and reply to though, but with my mental health as it is I’m really struggling to get anything done. This parcel actually arrived on Thursday, but I opened it on Friday afternoon. It’s a signed copy of Tanya Burr’s new baking book, Tanya Bakes, which I’m excited to look through and make some yummy treats. The mental health lady rang me in the evening, just to let me know she hadn’t forgotten me but hadn’t been able to speak to everyone she needed to yet.

Yesterday morning was fairly quiet and slow until my friend, Becky, came to pick me up. We went into Camberley and decided to have some lunch first, so went to Pizza Express who actually do quite a good range of gluten free options. Unfortunately I still ended up with bad digestive symptoms, but that pretty much happens whatever I eat these days, so not unexpected. After we’d eaten, we went next door to the cinema and watched The Secret Life of Pets. We were originally hoping to watch Me Before You, but the times were rubbish. However, the film we did see was pretty good and gave me a distraction from the things in my head for an hour or so. I came home, rested on the sofa and watched a few YouTube videos before falling asleep for a while.

I popped out into our garden when I got home from the cinema, and took some pictures of some of the beautiful flowers we have at the moment. There’s nothing better than expanses of pretty colours and gorgeous scents when you want to relax.

If you haven’t read my blog before, I just wanted to let you know that I have a second blog, which mainly focuses on my health in more depth than I talk about it here.
