In my life this week…

Psychiatrist appointment

After much fighting and nagging, this week I finally managed to get an emergency appointment with my psychiatrist. My Mum kindly drove me to the hospital and waited outside until I’d finished, which was great as I needed a bit of moral support. My psychiatrist was really nice and gave me a lot of a time, really listening to everything I had to say. She asked me a lot of different questions and didn’t rush me, which was definitely helpful as it can take me a while to put into words what’s going on in my head. She’s decided to add another medication to my current antidepressants and antipsychotics; in the hope it will take the edge off the depression a bit and make life a little bit easier to live. Unfortunately, she did say that people with my diagnosis (a personality disorder) often don’t respond to medication, so I shouldn’t get my hopes up too much. Apparently the best way to treat personality disorders is with ongoing support and treatment like STEPPS groups and DBT. This is great if you can actually access this support, but I’ve been on the waiting list since January and am still waiting. I’m meant to see my CPN (Community Psychiatric Nurse) at least every other week, but she’s taken it upon herself to reduce our sessions, so I’m not getting much support at all. I wish I’d remembered to have a moan about it to my psychiatrist, but I completely forgot. It’s so frustrating when you are begging for help to try and reduce the likelihood of you doing something to harm yourself and no one seems to listen.

Lipstick

I never used to wear lipstick. Lip-gloss was about as far as I would go, and even then it didn’t really enthuse me that much. But, just recently, I have really got into buying and wearing lipstick. Whenever I’m feeling down I pop a slick of colour on my lips and even just for that brief minute, it makes me smile. I’ve gone from being someone who never wore lipstick; to having so many lipsticks I’ve got nowhere to store them all! This week I went along to Boots and had a No7 Colour Match done, which was really fun. Firstly they used a little camera to take photos of my skin, and found out my colour match (Calico if you’re interested). They could then use my colour match to tell me which lip colours would suit my skin best. I decided to choose a lovely bright pinky colour, which I thought would brighten up any dark autumn day.

London South Bank University

I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned before, but at the moment I’m currently in the process of applying to University. My aim is to start in September 2015, once I’ve completed my college course, so I’ve been looking at a few local Uni’s who do my course (Occupational Therapy). Yesterday, my Dad and I headed up to London to see South Bank University. To be honest I wasn’t really taken with it, so I think it will probably be a no for me. I just didn’t get a good feeling about it and the Open Day all seemed a bit disorganised. I’m glad I went because I don’t think you can make a decision about a University without visiting it, but it’s definitely made me realise that I don’t want to go there. I’ve already looked at Brunel, which I loved, and Oxford Brookes, which I wasn’t that keen on. I’ve still got to look at Bournemouth and Southampton, but Southampton doesn’t have any Open Days until next year, which is a bit frustrating. I’ve sent them an e-mail to see if there’s any other way I can go and look round, as I’ve heard great things about it and it would be a good choice with regards to location for me.

What has grabbed your attention this week? I love hearing about people’s new discoveries and you may end up sharing something that makes it onto my list next week!

  2. So glad you managed to get an emergency appointment! I'm glad that service is available to you because on the whole, mental health services aren't brilliant! However, I hope you are feeling a little better and that the medication does help a little :)
For me, I booked in to get a tattoo in the upcoming week - quite excited!

    1. Thank you Samantha, yeah it's so hard to get any support from the service unfortunately. Oo that's exciting that you're getting a tattoo. I'd really like one but keep changing my mind about what I want! xx
