Summer Dreams...

I love nothing more than making wish lists. Pretending I’m filling my basket with lots of pretty things and indulging my shopping habit without spending a penny (she says, although list making is slightly dangerous as it makes me find things I want to buy!) One of the best times to make a wish list is when a new season is upon us. My wardrobe needs an injection of summer amongst all the cardigans and jumpers, so I’ve been having a browse and thought I’d share my summer wish list with you.

Minion T-shirt – New Look | Floral Maxi Skirt – Dorothy Perkins | Snoopy T-shirt – ASOS | Donut T-shirt – River Island | Unicorn T-shirt - ASOS

How cute are these character tees! I particularly love the Snoopy and Donut ones, and they’re all such a reasonable price. I’m also looking to get myself a Maxi skirt, as I’ve got quite a few skater skirts but would like to have something long and flowing too.

Flower Ring – River Island | Monochrome Playsuit – River Island | Pink and White Dress – New Look | Olivia Burton Watch – ASOS | Lilac Felt Fedora - ASOS

You can’t beat florals when it comes to summer fashion, plus the monochrome look is taking over the catwalks, so I thought the playsuit and dress would look amazing this season, especially when teamed with the gorgeous flower ring. I also love Olivia Burton watches, and thought this beautiful pink one was totally me. And who doesn’t want a sun hat that’s stylish and shields you from harmful waves? This fedora is perfect, and comes in a range of colours to suit any taste.

Pink Polaroid – Fujifilm | Nike Trainers – Sports Direct | Canvas Shoes – New Look | Pink Satchel – River Island | Floral Crown – New Look

I’ve wanted a Polaroid camera for ages and thought this pink one was great for the summer. I actually can’t choose between the pink and the white, as they’re both so pretty! I’m also loving the floral crown trend, but because I’m quite small I need something fairly delicate so it doesn’t completely overwhelm me. I thought this one was perfect, especially because it contains a bit of pink too!

Have you got a summer wish list? I’d love to hear what you’ve got on it!

Beat Volunteer Awards

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I had a very exciting trip up to London for the Beat Volunteer Awards at The Houses of Parliament. The charity has been fighting back against eating disorders for 25 years now, and throughout the year they are celebrating this with various special events, which include these awards. I thought you might like to hear about it, as it’s not every day you get to go somewhere so grand!

Rewind back a few months – I was browsing through my e-mails when I saw one from the lovely people at Beat. I’m on their database for volunteering and media, so I assumed it was another e-mail about something like that, but on reading it I found I had been nominated by two people, my youngest sister and a member of Beat staff, for a volunteer award! It was obviously lovely to be nominated, but I assumed that was all I would hear about it, as they said they’d be in contact if I happened to be shortlisted.

I didn’t really think any more about it for a couple of weeks, but then one day as I was browsing my e-mails, another from Beat popped up, this time telling me I had been shortlisted for the ‘Public Award’ in Campaigning and inviting me to a ceremony in the House of Commons in a couple of weeks time. I must admit it felt pretty surreal, as looking through the other nominees I felt like I hadn’t done half as much as they had. Still, it was an exciting opportunity so I started planning how I could make it while still unwell. I just want to say that Beat were fantastic with organising disabled access and making sure everything I needed was sorted out.

Wednesday 4th June came around, and after spending the morning resting, I dolled myself up and travelled to our nearest station with my Mum, Dad and youngest sister.

I decided to use my wheelchair, as I’m struggling with walking at the moment and wanted to make sure I was as comfortable as possible so nothing could spoil the evening. As I can walk a bit, we didn’t need to worry about booking assistance and thankfully I had plenty of people to help me on and off the train, while my Dad looked after the wheelchair.

I couldn’t resist taking a selfie on our train journey up to Waterloo. It took us about 40 minutes to get there and thankfully it wasn’t too crowded so I could make myself comfortable as we travelled. After hopping back into my chair at Waterloo, we headed outside the station towards the taxi rank.

We found a lovely taxi driver who helped us get the wheelchair into his cab. If anyone is ever in London using a wheelchair, I can’t praise the black cabs enough. They all have a ramp, so if you can’t get out of your chair it is easy to get into the back, and the driver we had was so accommodating.

We were dropped off just outside the Houses of Parliament, where all the roads were closed off as the Queen had been there in the morning. While policemen were turning everyone else away, we presented out invitation and were ushered through the roadblock towards the entrance. I felt like a celebrity!

As we had the wheelchair, we had to go a different way to everyone else, so were directed towards a ramp past the Houses of Parliament and into the back entrance.

We went through copious amounts of security screening, with my Dad managing to set off the alarms like he always does! A guide then took us through a maze of hallways, where we bumped into John Prescott and a few other recognisable MP’s.

Arriving at the Terrace Pavilion in the House of Commons, we were greeted by a fairly empty room (we were very early as we thought security would take a long time, which apparently it did for everyone else!) A few Beat staff were hanging around though and came to greet us. It was lovely being able to finally put faces to names, and after getting an orange juice from the bar, we had a lovely chat with Louise, who I’d been e-mailing about various things for a few months before.

The location was beautiful. The view over the Thames and the London Eye were just perfect, and the sunshine even made an appearance for us (before pelting it down with rain just as the awards started!)

My Dad was very excited to see a Cormorant on the river, and spent quite a while trying to get a decent photo of it!

As more people began to arrive, the most amazing canapés started to appear, and just seemed to keep coming! I actually found that eating little amounts spread over half an hour or so seemed to suit my tummy problems better. My Dad suggested that perhaps I should just live on canapés!

Once everyone had arrived, Caroline Noakes MP, who we had chatted to before hand, opened the awards. Caroline chairs the All-Party Group on Body Image, which has included getting eating disorders talked about in the Houses of Parliament, and is actually the MP for Southampton and Romsey, so not that far from me. After hearing from Caroline, Nick Hurd MP spoke and presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Diana Davies, a helpline volunteer.

Various other figures went on to present other awards for achievements ranging from innovation to service to community and from fundraising to education. Then came the category I was nominated in, campaigning, which recognised

“A volunteer who is a passionate and powerful champion; demonstrating enthusiasm and passion, they provide a voice in helping to achieve Beat’s mission.”

I was nominated alongside a fellow media volunteer, Sarah Robertson, Beat Cymru Ambassador Helen Missen and Rosie Driffill, the Self Help and Support Groups Facilitator and Publicity Officer. The winner was announced as Sarah Robertson, who I’d actually already predicted would win thanks to the amazing work she has done so far! Obviously winning would have been marvellous, but to just be nominated was an honour and being able to visit the Houses of Parliament was such a privilege. Compared to a lot of others, I’ve done very little work in campaigning so far, but I intend to continue to stand up and be honest about how eating disorders affect lives. I want to quash the stigma attached to mental illness, and the only way for this to happen is if we continue to speak out and be honest about what it’s really like to experience mental illnesses. This is something Sarah does amazingly, and you can find her over at her blog, Daydreams and Reality.

At the end of the awards I was presented with a certificate for being shortlisted, which was a lovely memento to keep. A lot of people stayed on after the awards for more canapés and chatting, but I was feeling pretty wiped out so we decided to head home.

After collecting my Beat goody bag, we hailed another black cab and headed back to Waterloo.

While my Dad and sister headed to get some food and drink for the journey home, my Mum and I popped into WHSmith to pick up a couple of magazines. The train arrived and we bundled on and I curled up with a book, nodding off at every opportunity, until we reached our local station.

I want to thank Beat for inviting me to such an amazing experience and for giving me the opportunities to talk to the media about eating disorders. I hope that I can continue to campaign for awareness and research into these illnesses that destroy lives. If you’d like to see the other fantastic nominees and what they have done, you can find them all here.

Do you have any questions about eating disorders, or mental illness in general? Have you ever campaigned for awareness and understanding into mental health problems?

Sunday Spotlight - 15th June 2014

In my life this week…

Crafting with friends

This week I had a lovely visit from a couple of friends, one of whom I’d met before and the other I met through a friend and we’ve been texting for a few months. It was so lovely to see someone who isn’t a medical professional and to actually feel like a normal young woman for a while! We spent our afternoon celebrating my friend’s 21st with sparklers and cake, and then doing some arts and crafts on the lounge floor. We all do scrapbooking, so brought a load of stuff and laid it all out. As you can see, for three people we managed to take over the whole lounge and make quite a mess, but I like to think of it as a creative mess! I love doing scrapbooking, and doing it with friends has given me so much inspiration.

Daisies

Hasn’t the weather this week been beautiful? Although a little too hot for me at some points, it’s been lovely being able to relax out in the garden and feel the grass under my feet and sunshine on my face. It makes such a difference being able to sit in the sunshine for a bit and really helps to lift my mood. One day this week I decided to head out into the garden and pick myself some pretty daisies. I love them – they remind me of my childhood; sitting on the school field with a load of friends making daisy chains and wrapping them round our wrists before heading back inside for lessons. I’ve actually done a vlog tour of my garden, which I’ll be uploading here very soon, so keep your eyes peeled!

Art projects

I used to do a lot of art, and really enjoyed the subject when I was at school because there was no wrong or right, and I could express myself in a way that was right for me. Since leaving school I’ve not had much opportunity to be creative, and I’ve missed it more than anything. But seeing my friends this week inspired me to get back into my drawing and colouring. One of the girls, Sophie, does this amazing art journal; doing a page each and every day, and it looks amazing. You can find her blog here. Although I don’t think I’m up to doing that amount of art, I’ve joined a couple of weekly art projects related to an eating disorder recovery group, and have also decided to get back into drawing and perhaps try and sell some cards.

What has grabbed your attention this week? I love hearing about people’s new discoveries and you may end up sharing something that makes it onto my list next week!

My Quest for the best cuppa - Tetley edition*

A few months ago I wrote a post about looking for the best hot chocolate you can make at home. I had so much fun trying different varieties, so I thought it would be fun to make it into a series, looking at a whole variety of foods and drinks. So, I had a think about what I could review next, and tea came to mind. I had planned to test a few teas and write it all up in one post…I did not prepare myself for the number of teas there are available! I came to the conclusion that one post would simply not be enough to cover the massive range of teas I am trying, so I’ve decided to break it down into separate posts for different brands.

The first brand I have tried is Tetley. The people at Tetley very kindly sent me a range of their teas to sample, and I’ve had great fun trying a new one each day and making notes in my ‘Tea Tasting Table.’

The best way to review this bundle of teas is to take you through them one at a time, and then come to a conclusion at the end, so here goes.

Decaf

I added a little soya milk to this and it was perfect. I wouldn’t have known it was decaf if I hadn’t read the label, and it had a rich, warming taste.

Earl Grey

I’ve not tried Earl Grey before, as to be honest, I thought it wouldn’t be my cup of tea! But I was pleasantly surprised to find I actually liked it. This has a delicate, floral taste and is perfect for that afternoon slump with a piece of Victoria sponge.

Camomile

I’m a big fan of camomile tea, so was excited to try Tetley’s version, and it didn’t disappoint. It was comforting and safe, and the rich smell helped me relax before I headed off to bed.

Lemon Green Tea

I quite like Green Tea, so was interested to see what it would be like with a hint of lemon, and I’m pleased to say it went really well. The lemon gives it a fresh, citrus kick, giving you a tasty alternative to a standard Green Tea.

Peppermint

Peppermint is another of my favourites and I find it particularly good for calming my stomach and digestive symptoms. I find some Peppermint teas can be a bit bland, but this version had a lovely fresh taste and would be perfect for an after dinner unwind.

Green Tea

This brand of Green Tea was refreshing and simple; just what I look for.

Redbush

I’d never tried Redbush before, but have seen a lot of hype about it on social media, so I was excited to see what all the fuss was about. I can now understand the hype, although I felt it was a better drink for winter than summer. It has a warming quality, which would be perfect for snuggling up in front of the fire.

Blend of Both

This has all the benefits of Green Tea but with the taste of normal tea, and I actually really enjoyed it. It was refreshing and made me feel better about drinking my cup of tea, as I could tell myself it was full of goodness!

Green Tea – Raspberry and Pomegranate

I wasn’t sure how the next few flavours would combine with Green Tea, so was interested to test them and see if they worked. And they did indeed work. This flavour had a nice mild taste, and the only thing I would change is to make the raspberry and pomegranate taste a little stronger. The scent was beautiful though.

Green Tea – Mango and Passion fruit

I had a similar problem with this tea as I did with the previous flavour – the scent was fantastic, but the actual taste was a bit weak and bland. Don’t get me wrong, it was a nice cup of Green Tea, but I just felt the extra flavours didn’t come through as much as I’d hoped.

Green Tea – Peach and Apricot

Out of the three flavoured Green Teas I think this one was my favourite, which surprised me as I thought I’d enjoy the raspberry one more. But I found the taste seemed to come through better with this flavour. It had a lovely scent and a sweet taste, perfect for my sweet tooth.

Green Tea – Mint

This was a great combination, giving you the cleanness of a Green Tea with the freshness of mint.

Something that I particularly liked about the Tetley Teas was their funky tea bag. You simply pull the string out, pop your tea bag in a mug and pour over hot water as normal. Then, instead of having to use a spoon or something to squeeze your tea bag, you pull the strings and it squeezes out your tea bag for you. Cool or what?!

Overall, I was really impressed with the Tetley Tea range, especially the Peppermint and Redbush, and am certain I will be purchasing them in the future.

*Teabags were gifted to me by Tetley

Are you a Tetley Tea fan, or is there another brand you prefer? What is your favourite type of tea of the ones I’ve reviewed today?

Disney Addiction

I’m a huge Disney fan, and my idea of Heaven is going to Disneyworld in Florida and being completely immersed in a fantasyland of make-believe characters. Disney characters, over the last few months, seem to have crept into the fashion world and I don’t know about you, but I’m loving it! Gone are the days when you have to be five years old to wear a Mickey Mouse jumper, and even Mickey Mouse ears have made an appearance on the catwalks! I thought I’d share a few of my favourite Disney themed clothes with you, so without further ado, I present to you Disney fashion.

ASOS are particularly great for Disney clothes (as are Primark) and as you can see in the montage above, you can dress in a whole range of characters from Thumper to Mickey and from Peter Pan to Daisy Duck. There really is something for everyone!

And it’s not just clothes that have been taken up by the excitement of Disney…

You can get accessories like watches, necklaces and earrings from places like Swarovski, which are just beautiful. Who’s to say you can’t be a mature woman and wear Disney accessories at the same time?! I especially love these OPI themed nail varnishes – they’re a great brand for Disney themes, and in the past have done Minnie Mouse and Cinderella editions.

With all this Disney excitement buzzing around, I couldn’t help myself when browsing on my iPad for new clothes. A few Disney products just happened to drop into my basket (how does that even happen?!) and to be honest I don’t regret it at all! My Mickey Mouse jumper from New Look is so comfy and has had so many positive comments from friends and bloggers. And my new Mickey Mouse Tunic from ASOS is fantastic for this warm weather as it’s nice and light and baggy, allowing for plenty of air to circulate.

So, there we have it – just a few of my favourite Disney fashion products. There are so many to choose from out there and I keep finding more to add to my shopping list. I somehow don’t think this Disney theme will be disappearing any time soon, and for that, I’m eternally grateful!

Have you made any Disney purchases recently? Can you recommend anything else I should be putting in my shopping basket?

Beat Awards FOTD

I’ve never done a Face of the Day post before, mainly because I’m pretty self-conscious about my face and I’m in no way an expert on make-up and beauty products! I have bags under my eyes that rival a large suitcase and am paler than Casper the friendly ghost! But, I decided that as I’d made so much effort to do my make-up for the Beat Volunteer Awards on Wednesday, I would show you the products I used and the end result.

As you can see, the majority of the products I used were by Benefit. What can I say? I’m a Benebabe through and through! I began with the Bad Gal Pencil to line my eyes, making them pop out and look more defined.

I then applied a thin layer of Big Easy, which was all I needed to cover blemishes and discolouration. For any blemishes that were still visible, I applied a small amount of Erase paste, which is fantastic for covering blemishes and dark circles, which I’m particularly self-conscious about.

After this, I applied the Porefessional over my nose and the area around it, which is where I have the most visible pores. I’d never used it before but am now 100% converted – it was brilliant and my pores almost completely disappeared!

To finish my look, I applied a slick of this gorgeous fuchsia lipstick from Avon, which is called Country Rose. It gave my lips a beautiful colour to go with my English rose complexion. And that was that – my look was completed and off I went to The Houses of Parliament!

Have you used any of these products? Or can you recommend any other products for my skin concerns?

Jen's Book Swap

When I think of Summer, the thing that always comes to mind is the thought of relaxing in the sunshine with a good book. I don’t know about you, but I always find it difficult to fit in as much reading as I’d like, so when holidays come around there’s nothing I want to do more than get stuck in a fantasy world constructed by my favourite author. This gave me an idea…

I’ve been part of various swaps recently, where you are assigned a theme and have to send someone a box of goodies related to the theme. I find it great fun and a lovely way to get to know new people, while being cheered up with some happy mail. So, I thought it would be fun to run my own swap. I introduce you to ‘Jen’s Book Swap!’
