Sunday Snippets - 23rd October 2016

This week has been crazy busy and I feel like my feet haven’t touched the floor. It was so good to get to Friday evening, knowing I had two days of no plans in front of me (even if I do have a list of work longer than my arm to do!) It’s only another week until half term from Uni, and I seriously cannot wait! I will have to spend most of it catching up with work, blogging and various other things from my to-do list, but hopefully I’ll be able to have the odd lie-in too.

I decided to try and not have too much of a lie-in last Sunday morning, as I had so much to do. And I actually didn’t do too badly with getting up! I spent my morning watching episodes of The Simpsons and writing a blog post. I lit one of my Yankee Candles - I know it’s only October, but I do love a Christmas candle! I then sorted out a load of filing for my Uni work, which I’d been meaning to do for ages. David and Emma popped round, so I chatted to them for a while as they were off to New York towards the end of the week (and I’m not jealous at all!) The Rescuers was on TV in the afternoon, so I popped that on and spent most of the afternoon doing Uni work. I keep feeling really headachy, so I thought I should get a bit of fresh air considering I hadn’t been out of the house for two days. So my Dad and I went for a tiny walk out of our back gate with the dogs. I don’t think the dogs are very impressed if I ever go out for a walk with them, as they don’t get to walk very far! Going out for long walks (or any walks a lot of the time) is something I really miss as my health has got worse. I’m looking for an electric wheelchair to give me more independence but it’s probably not going to be suitable for country walks. I’m guessing if I want something like that though I’m going to need to buy two different chairs, which I can’t really afford to do.

I had to be up super early on Monday morning so my Dad could take me over to the hospital. I had a phone call on Sunday evening asking me to go in for an MRI at 7.15am! We got about half way through the scan of my hips and the radiographer came through and said the pictures were looking very strange. After a bit of investigation we worked out I had a tiny mental button on my trousers. So we started the scan again, minus the trousers! I was in the scanner for an hour in total. My Dad and I then went to the hospital cafĂ© for a bit of breakfast before heading over to Uni. Our morning at Uni consisted of talking about interview techniques, and I also went through my narrative article ideas with my tutor, so I now know which topics I’m covering. After lunch, a guest speaker came in to talk to us about writing longer articles and doing interviews. He was really interesting and shared a lot of advice and knowledge with us. I was exhausted by the time I got home and pretty much crashed out on the sofa for the evening. This unicorn picture that my friend, Becca, sent me for my birthday made me smile.

Getting up on Tuesday morning was even more of a struggle than normal. My Dad drove me to Uni for another news day. Myself and my friend Amber took on a story about a piece of research that shows Southerners are the most likely to avoid the 5p bag charge by bringing their own bags. We headed over to Waitrose to get some interviews with customers about their opinions on the matter, and then went back to Uni to start editing. We also had to write a piece for online, so Amber focussed on the radio piece while I wrote an article to go online. I also had to record our narrative to go with the interviews for the radio piece. At the end of the day we listened to the final broadcast before my Dad brought me home. I felt absolutely drained and had been feeling really unwell all day. I seem to be finding this a lot harder on my health so far this year, and I’m worried how I’m going to cope. I’ve also been feeling pretty upset about being such a burden on people. I have to rely on people for so much, like my Dad to drive me to and from Uni, but I can’t see another option. My health is getting worse and I don’t feel safe to drive myself to and from Uni, never mind not being able to lift my wheelchair in and out of the car. It’s just getting me down at the moment.

My Dad and I were up pretty early on Wednesday morning so we could drive to the station. Traffic was awful and we ended up having to park in a side road so we didn’t miss our train. We went to Guildford and made our way to the Crown Court. It was a long and pretty intense morning sitting in on a case. Afterwards, my Dad and I went to Costa for a bit of lunch before catching the train back. We popped into Waitrose on our way home so my Dad could pick something up. I spent the rest of the afternoon making phone calls to sort out medical things and doing some Uni work. I was so glad to finally get into bed in the evening!

On Thursday morning I managed to oversleep a bit, so it was a bit of a rush with my Dad driving me over to Aldershot. I had another session of this Recovery College group I’m doing, but really struggled to focus because my pain levels were really bad. When we got home I just tried to rest on the sofa for a little while. It was my Mum and Dad’s wedding anniversary, so they went out just after lunch to go up to London to see a show. These are some of the roses in the bunch of flowers my Dad bought my Mum. I spent a while watching Family Guy and doing Uni work. I then drove myself down to the hairdressers and had my hair cut. After some rest at home, in the evening my sister, Rosiie, and I met my brother, David, for a drink before he went off on holiday to New York.

I actually got to have a bit of a lie-in on Friday morning, which was definitely needed. I had to miss my first lecture at Uni because I had to wait in for my Neurogastroenterology Professor to ring. I was getting quite anxious as he hadn’t rung, but an hour after our appointment time the phone rang thankfully. He thinks I still have problems with small bowel bacterial overgrowth, so I have to continue with courses of strong antibiotics and increase my probiotics. He has also said that he believes I have mast cell problems (Mast Cell Activation Disorder), which is likely to be making a lot of my symptoms worse. He’s going to talk to my Neurologist about prescribing something to try and help it, but unfortunately there’s no cure. I’ve got mixed feelings about it all and am still trying to get my head around it. It’s good to have a diagnosis, but upsetting and worrying to have another serious incurable illness. After my phone call my Dad drove me over to Uni. I was meant to be seeing my mentor, but because I was so late all we got to do was say a quick hello. In the afternoon we had our Law lecture, which was pretty intense but very interesting. I was really glad to get home though, put the kettle on and rest.

I had a really long lie-in on Saturday morning, but really didn’t feel well when I woke up. This always seems to happen at the weekends. I push myself so much during the week then end up crashing on my days off. It took me ages to get myself started with anything, but I finally managed to edit and upload a new video to my YouTube channel, which is good as I’m not uploading as much as I’d like to now I’m back at Uni. In the afternoon I caught up on a couple of episodes of a new series called The Level, which I’m really enjoying. I also spent most of the afternoon filling in my PIP forms. They’re so difficult to fill in and my brain really ached afterwards, but I made a good dent in them. Hopefully my Dad can help me finish them, as they have to be sent back within about three weeks. This little sleepy chap kept me company all afternoon.

You can check out my YouTube channel here, where I have recently uploaded a few new videos (and hope to continue doing!)

I’m also trying to post on Snapchat a bit more, so if you fancy following me, my username is Jennycole44.

If you don’t already, please give me a follow on Bloglovin here - I would love to reach 800 followers, and do have a little giveaway planned for when I get there!

What have you been up to this week? I always enjoy hearing about your news and adventures!

Sunday Snippets - 14th February 2016

It’s been a fairly busy week, which has been a bit of a struggle with my health playing up, but I’ve managed to schedule in some rest periods as well. I really need to get my head around pacing a bit better, as it’s something I’ve never been very good at, but there’s just so much I want to do that I end up trying to squeeze it all in and then crashing out! I guess it’s just finding things that fit in with my life and the things I want to do, to make them as easy for my body as possible.

Last Sunday was a very chilled out day, which I desperately needed after a hectic week. In the morning I decided to sit on my bed to take some photos of products for blog posts, as the light is quite good there. I set everything up and started snapping. About an hour later I opened my eyes to find I’d fallen asleep on my pillow with my camera still in my hand – oops! I spent the rest of the day trying to do some blogging and photo editing. Various family members also popped in throughout the afternoon, so I chatted to them a bit. I took this photo of Alfie in the evening – everyone had either gone out or gone upstairs, and he decided to settle down at the bottom of the stairs and wait for someone to come back down!

On Monday morning I had to go into Uni for a couple of hours to get some grades back from an assessment. I did fairly well, so was happy with that and understand what I need to do to improve. When I got home I wrote and published my blog post about the Festival Place Valentine’s Event and then filmed two YouTube videos. I’m excited to get those edited and up on my channel! These two books came in the post, which was nice. I’m looking forward to trying some recipes from the Deliciously Ella book, and I’ve wanted to read Me Before You for ages.

Tuesday was quite a relaxed day, which was nice for a change! In the morning my Mum took me over to my friend, Katy’s, house for a facial. It was so amazingly relaxing and I actually nodded off a few times, which I don’t normally do with spa treatments. I’ll definitely be having one again! I then came home and ended up falling asleep on the sofa. I’m really struggling with my fatigue levels at the moment – I’ve always found it one of the most difficult symptoms to deal with, as there really is nothing anyone can do to improve it. After resting for a while, my Dad took me to the hospital for an appointment with my physio. I had some more acupuncture, which seems to be helping the pain a bit in the places he’s putting the needles (my lower back and neck). In the evening I needed to wash my hair, so decided to use some of my Rose Jam shower gel, which smells amazing!

Wednesday was a completely free day, which was absolute bliss! I was meant to be having some more training with my DSA equipment, but the lady text me in the morning to say she wasn’t well. I tried to do some tidying and sorting in my bedroom, but didn’t get very far as I kept falling asleep and just couldn’t motivate myself. The afternoon went a bit better, as I managed to get some Uni work done and wrote a few letters to penpals, whilst catching up on Death in Paradise. This month’s My Little Box arrived in the post, which is always exciting to see what’s inside.

On Thursday I had Uni all day – it was pretty manic for a while, as we were getting ready for our news broadcast. We spent the morning getting everything sorted, edited and tying up loose ends. Then in the afternoon we went ‘live’ with our television news programme, which was so much fun. It went really well and looked pretty professional (although I know I’m biased!) We then had tea and cake, watched it back and had a debrief. I was totally shattered by the end of the day but it felt good to have produced something we were all so happy with.

On Friday morning my friend, Helen, came over with my little Godson, Jack. It was so lovely to see them both and see how much Jack has changed since I last saw him. It really made my day. They stayed for just over an hour, and then Jack needed a nap so they headed off. I spent the rest of the morning sorting out a load of things that needed posting. In the afternoon I had a lecture at Uni, but wasn’t feeling too well and found it quite difficult to get through it. It was lovely to come home and crash out on the sofa. I also had a lovely surprise waiting for me – these gorgeous Accessorize gloves, which were a belated Christmas present from my friend, Lizzy.

Yesterday was nice, but incredibly difficult. I woke up not feeling brilliant, but had arranged to meet up with my friend, Becky, which I didn’t want to cancel. We went to a local place called ‘Watts Gallery,’ which I’d actually never heard of, so it was interesting to discover it! We went to the tearoom there first for some lunch, which I really tried with but was feeling more unwell by the minute. It was a shame, as the food was amazing and I wish I could have enjoyed it more. We then had a look around the gift shop, where I found a few cute cards, and the art gallery, but I was struggling to stay upright so spent a lot of time sitting down. In retrospect I should have taken my wheelchair, but even if I had I don’t think I could have propelled myself around. It was another reminder that I desperately need an electric wheelchair, so I’m going to have to push forward and get one I think. Despite this, it was lovely to catch up with Becky and we’re hoping to do a DVD day soon. When I got home, I curled up on the sofa and slept for the rest of the afternoon. My Dad ended up waking me up at about 6pm, so I decided to have a pamper in the bath, with a face and hair mask.

If you haven’t read my blog before, I just wanted to let you know that I have a second blog, which mainly focuses on my health in more depth than I talk about it here. It’s largely for friends and family to follow and keep up with what’s going on, but if it’s something you would be interested in reading as well, you are more than welcome to follow me over there. It’s called Unicorns and Floral Crowns and you can find it by clicking here. I haven’t updated it for a while, but I hope to get into a routine soon. I’m also trying to post on Snapchat a bit more, so if you fancy following me, my username is Jennycole44.

What have you been up to this week? I always enjoy hearing about your news and adventures!

Share Your Love at Festival Place

Festival Place shopping centre in Basingstoke is spreading the love this February with their special ‘Share Your Love’ Valentine’s competition. Launched on Saturday 6th February, the campaign invites customers to share photos of themselves with loved ones on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with #FPValentines for the chance to win big prizes. I went along with my Mum on Saturday to see what it’s all about!

The first thing you come across in the space outside Marks and Spencer and Costa, is a giant silver heart, decorated with roses and fairy lights. For anyone that was around Festival Place last year, this is the same heart that was used for the ‘Lock Your Love’ campaign, which raised an amazing £1,402 for The Ark Cancer Charity, but I think the pastel roses make it look even cuter! The Breeze Radio were also there, injecting some music and chatter into the mix.

A deep purple sign directs you to a ‘selfie spot,’ where you are encouraged to donate £1 to charity and take a selfie in front of the heart, with a friend or loved one. You then upload your photo to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, including #FPValentines for a chance to win a whole host of amazing prizes.

Including the hashtag enables them to print out a Polaroid picture, which you can then peg to the giant heart for everyone to see. If you’re not on social media then don’t worry, you can still join in! Simply email your photo to marketing@festivalplace.co.uk or bring one along on the day and pay your donation to the Festival Place Information Desk. Photos can be taken at any time, but they will only be available at the printing station outside Marks and Spencer on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th February.

My Mum and I decided to have a go, so we positioned ourselves in front of the heart and snapped a few selfies. After choosing our favourite, I uploaded it to Twitter, including the #FPValentines, and as if by magic, we were presented with a copy of our photo to peg on the heart. They also very kindly printed out another one for us to take home, so that is now pinned to the fridge!

There are some fantastic prizes on offer, including Vue Cinema tickets for two, a Pandora bracelet and a Festival Place £100 Gift Card. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the gift card, although to be honest I’d be happy with any of the prizes! As well as the campaign being a bit of fun, Festival Place is also hoping to raise lots of money for local charity Dreams Come True. They are a national UK charity, based in Liphook that work hard to make dreams come true for children and young people with serious and life-limiting conditions.

While I was taking some photos, Mum and I noticed a queue forming next to us. After some confusion, we realised they were handing out free Krispy Kreme doughnuts! My Mum quickly made her way to the back of the (ridiculously!) long queue, and some time later returned with two boxes of 24 glazed ring doughnuts! It turned out Krispy Kreme are opening a new store at Festival Place on 24th February at 10am, so were giving out 500 free boxes of their original doughnuts. We were definitely in the right place at the right time!

I’m not really a fan of Valentine’s Day, but I enjoyed finding out more about the ‘Share Your Love’ campaign. I think it’s a lovely way to share some love with friends and family, whilst raising money for a good cause at the same time. It’s great the way Festival Place come up with so many new fun ideas year after year, and I’m looking forward to hearing how this particular event went (and maybe winning a prize in the process!)

Will you be going along to Festival Place to ‘Share Your Love’ this week? Do you have any plans for Valentine’s Day, or are you more of a scrooge like me?!

Exciting Events at Festival Place, Basingstoke

With the nights drawing in it’s really starting to feel like autumn/winter now, which can only mean one thing – Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas! I must admit I don’t tend to do much for Halloween, but I wanted to share a couple of events coming up at Festival Place, Basingstoke, as I thought they sounded like great fun. I was quite excited when the press releases for these upcoming celebrations dropped into my inbox, so hopefully they will excite you just as much.

First up is a Halloween Spooktacular, suitable for both young and old. This is Festival Place’s two-day long Halloween extravaganza, taking place from Friday October 30th to Saturday October 31st. This fiendish family fun event will have a range of eerie entertainment, 12-6pm, to get customers set for the scary season.

Porchester Square will be transformed into the centre’s very own Spooky Hollow, raising money for Ark Cancer Centre Charity, with scary face painting and a Shear Beauty nail art stand for kids (big kids are welcome too!)

Customers will then have the chance to win a variety of great prizes from Festival Place’s retailers simply by taking a photo in the centre’s custom-built photo booth (including scary props!) and sharing it on social media with the hashtag #spookyfp.

Prizes will go to the spookiest photos, so customers are encouraged to come along in their creepiest costumes and ghoulish gear.

If that wasn’t enough, Festival Place have also organised a massive evening of entertainment for their Christmas Lights Switch On! They will kick off Christmas this year on 13th November with their annual Light Switch On. Starting at 5.30pm, the shopping centre will host a range of family entertainment and transform into your ‘festive place’!

Breeze FM’s Breakfast presenters, Ben Moseby and Lizzie Crow will host the Christmas activities. Santa himself will turn the Christmas lights on, along with this year’s Anvil Panto star Mark Little (aka Neighbours’ Joe Mangle).

Adding to the Christmas entertainment will be The Military Wives Choir, made famous by Gareth Malone’s original BBC TV series, The Choir. Initially set up to help women in the military community to share the enjoyment and pride that comes from singing; the choir’s enormous success has included a number one single and the creation of the Military Wives Choirs Foundation.

The evening will also include performances from ‘Walk like a Man’ Jersey Boys tribute act, featuring West End singers. If that is not enough they have a special Festival Reward Discount Weekender from Friday 13th November across the whole weekend! Customers who have signed up to Festival Rewards via the new Festival Place mobile app will be able to get a whole host of discounts from the likes of the Fragrance Shop, Laura Ashley, Hotel Chocolat, GBK, La Tasca and Paperchase to name but a few.

And to make sure Santa knows exactly what your little ones want this year, Festival Place will be launching their official Christmas Experience. The best way to meet Santa, here children will have to chance to enjoy a Christmas train trip before making a special visit to Santa’s festive grotto.

The Christmas Experience will open at 12pm on 12th November and from 13th November will be open Monday-Thursday – 10.30am-6.30pm, Friday – 10.30am-7.30pm, Saturday – 9am-6pm and Sunday – 11a-6pm. From 14th – 23rd December the Christmas Experience will then be open for an extra hour before closing at 3pm on 24th December as Santa leaves Festival Place to get ready for his busy night! To book your place, just click here.

Throughout the festival season the Festival Place team will be working hard to make sure the Christmas shopping experience is as easy and stress-free for customers as possible – with their special Festival Place ‘Festive Services’ pop-up Christmas shop. Whether a customer is looking for the best gifts to buy, needs help with their shopping bags or just wants some directions, Festival Place’s Christmas dedicated staff will be on hand to assist.

Parking won’t be a problem either this Christmas as Festival Place’s car park has over 2,500 car parking spaces. Customers park for just £1 if you park after 5pm all the way through to 6am.
