Sunday Snippets - 17th July 2016

It’s been quite a difficult week unfortunately, both with my physical and mental health. It just feels never-ending at the moment, which is incredibly exhausting and frustrating. Still, as I write this post I’m sitting watching Hairspray, and who can’t help but smile, sing and have a boogie to that film!

Last Sunday I was woken up by the rain hammering down on our tent, which wasn’t the sound I was hoping to hear! I didn’t sleep brilliantly, so felt pretty sleepy all day. As it was raining we all had breakfast together in one of the tents, before packing everything up. Some of the party went to look round a nearby town, but we decided to head home as we were all feeling pretty shattered. The drive back wasn’t too bad thankfully. I unpacked my stuff then snuggled on the sofa with these two, who were very pleased to see us. I popped to Waitrose with my Mum to get a few vegetarian bits for dinner, and then spent the afternoon blogging. My brother, Richard, came over and we had a BBQ. I then decided to treat myself to a bit of pampering for my self care Sunday, so did a relaxing face mask to soothe my sunburnt skin. I felt quite poorly in the evening unfortunately.

I woke up feeling pretty rubbish on Monday, which wasn’t exactly unexpected after our busy weekend. I had a fairly quiet but productive morning sorting through some of my clothes drawers and getting rid of things. I think I wore myself out though, as I then crashed out on the sofa for quite a while and snuggled up with Freddie. It was one of those days where it felt like my body just couldn’t hold me up and my legs felt all wobbly. After some rest I filmed myself opening a load of post that had built up. I opened some lovely post from Meg, Izzy, Naomi, Luch and Jette. I spent quite a while reading all these lovely letters and catching up on YouTube videos.

Tuesday morning I managed to do a bit of photo editing and then had my reflexology session. It was really relaxing and I nearly fell asleep. After we’d finished I snuggled under my blanket with Freddie for a while, as I felt really wiped out and pretty low as well. In the afternoon I watched a load of YouTube videos and caught up on my rather full blogger inbox. I’m terrible at keeping on top of my e-mails, so it felt good to have gone through most of them.

I also opened this lovely subscription box from Veronica Dearly, which always makes me smile.

On Wednesday Jaffa woke me up at around 5am (again!) by knocking a ceramic heart off my chest of drawers – it scared the life out of me! I had a bit of a slow morning, as I just felt a bit rubbish really. I managed to write a blog post but couldn’t upload it because Blogger was playing up. I did get a new video up over on my YouTube though, which was good. My Dad and brother popped over to Costco and picked me up this Nutribullet. I’ve been contemplating getting one for about a year now, as my doctors have recommended blending things more to try and help my digestive problems. So when I saw it massively reduced I thought I wouldn’t see it at such a good price again. If you know of any yummy recipes, I'd love to hear them please! In the afternoon I replied to a few Facebook messages then watched some programmes I’d recorded and wrote some letters to my penpals. I popped to Waitrose with my Mum and bumped into an old friend, which was nice.

Thursday morning I woke up quite late as Jaffa had woken me up again at around 5am! I finally managed to upload my blog post from Wednesday and edited a video. In the afternoon I was feeling really sick, so I watched some programmes I had on record and did some bits on my laptop. I then went out with my Mum, as she had to drop something off for someone. I downloaded Pokémon Go, so tried to catch some Pokémon on the way. We then popped to the chemist and Waitrose before coming home.

Friday was a pretty difficult day. In the morning I watched some rubbish TV and edited a load of photos. I tried to rest for a bit, but felt so anxious I just couldn’t settle. My Mum took me down to see my GP in the afternoon. We only really talked about my physical health, so I came home feeling quite tearful as I guess I’d hoped she might have thought of a way to help me with my mental health. I then rang the mental health lady that I mentioned in my post a couple of weeks ago. She had said she would ring me back the following day, but after two weeks I’d heard nothing.

It turned out she just hadn’t bothered to ring me back, which felt pretty rubbish. She said she’d spoken to my old psychiatrist and that I needed to just go with the ‘plan’ and manage on my own, or look for something in the community/private help. I just completely broke down and sobbed for ages. I stupidly pinned all my hopes on her finding a way to help me, and just feel so let down by the whole service. I’ve been completely honest with them about my mental health rapidly deteriorating, but they’ve turned me away every time. My Dad found me and took me out for a tiny walk with the dogs, as he didn’t want to leave me on my own. He then took me to a local place called the Safe Haven, which is basically a place for people to go if they are experiencing a mental health crisis. It’s not open all the time unfortunately, but I’d never been before and we didn’t know what else to do. They were very welcoming and kind, and just gave me the space to talk with one of the volunteers. I also spoke to a psychiatric nurse (they always have one working when they’re open) and told her everything. Hearing her say ‘we will help you get through this’ meant more than I can possibly describe. After being turned away by so many people it’s amazing what a few simple words can do. She gave me a number to ring on Monday for a charity who helps people with mental health problems, so I will give them a ring and see what they do. She asked me to try and keep myself safe while we try and find something to help me, but did say they can refer me back to mental health services if need be. I came home quite late feeling absolutely drained, but so grateful for those people at the Safe Haven. Don’t get me wrong, things are no better, but being there helped me feel a bit safer. My Dad also said to me that he wants to take me back to my GP to ask for a second opinion on my mental health diagnosis. While I agree with him that I don’t feel happy with the diagnosis or the way I’ve been treated, I’m hugely anxious about making a fuss.

Yesterday was a lot more stressful than it should have been. I got up reasonably early, and my Mum and I made our way into London for a blogger event I’d been invited to. Getting to Waterloo was absolutely fine, but after that the problems started. We couldn’t get the tube to our destination, as the nearest stations didn’t have disabled access. So we decided to take a bus. We waited, and waited, for our bus, but after goodness knows how long the bus still hadn’t materialised. It turned out most of the roads around our destination had been closed for a protest, so a large number of buses had been cancelled. Great! After wandering around trying to find a different bus in the hot sun for what felt like ages, we decided to take a taxi. Despite it costing an arm and a leg, the driver was really lovely and I was able to relax a bit after getting very panicky amongst the crowds. The actual event was really lovely. I’ll be doing a separate blog post and vlog about it, so I won’t go into too much detail, but it was for the launch of a brand called My Favourite Sale. We had drinks, a presentation, afternoon tea and lots of blogger networking – I met so many lovely people. Our journey home wasn’t quite as bad. Once we managed to find the right bus stop we caught a bus that took us straight back to Waterloo. It was incredibly tiring and I was pretty wired when we finally got home, but thankfully the event made it better and gave me some good memories of the day.

If you haven’t read my blog before, I just wanted to let you know that I have a second blog, which mainly focuses on my health in more depth than I talk about it here. It’s largely for friends and family to follow and keep up with what’s going on, but if it’s something you would be interested in reading as well, you are more than welcome to follow me over there. It’s called ‘Zebra Crossing’ and you can find it by clicking here. I’m trying to keep it updated fairly regularly, so hopefully there will be something there for you to read!

You can also check out my YouTube channel here, where I have recently uploaded a few new videos (and hope to continue doing!)

I’m also trying to post on Snapchat a bit more, so if you fancy following me, my username is Jennycole44.

What have you been up to this week? I always enjoy hearing about your news and adventures!

Sunday Snippets - 5th June 2016

You may have noticed I didn’t post a Sunday Snippets last week. Unfortunately I hadn’t had a very good week, as I was quite unwell (more of that in a minute), so I decided to just take some time away from my blog to focus on getting myself feeling a bit better again without having to worry that I hadn’t posted. Thankfully things improved a bit, and although I’m still not feeling great, I can at least get back to doing what I love; blogging and YouTube. It’s amazing how much I miss it when I’m not able to do it, and even when I am able to blog or film, I feel desperate to be able to upload more content. I have so many ideas in my head for blog posts and videos, I just wish my body would play ball and let me achieve my plans! I try not to give myself a hard time about it, but it’s hard. Anyway, I thought as I’d missed last week’s update I would do a double update this week. I will try my best not to make it too long, but you know me, I’m terrible for rambling (hence the blog name!)

The Sunday before last I woke up fairly late feeling not so great, but managed to get myself up and dressed eventually. I spent the morning writing and uploading a blog post and watching a bit of The Simpsons. In the afternoon I watched a bit of The Smurfs 2 (don’t judge!) on TV and wrote an article about strokes for a local magazine. I then wrote a few birthday cards for June and rested a bit. How cute is this unicorn card?! I was really ill in the evening and there were a lot of tears.

On the Monday I woke up feeling pretty rough again, as I’d had a bad night with feeling quite unwell. I tried to take things slowly throughout the morning but did manage to get a bit of tidying done in my bedroom – when I’m anxious I seem to tidy, although I think I overdid it. I came across this lovely piece of jewellery that a friend gave me for Christmas and with how I was feeling it just felt like a little reminder to hold onto hope. I spent the afternoon trying to get a Fortisip down me, as eating was a struggle and everything just seems to make me more unwell. I had hoped to get some admin and planning done on my laptop, but ended up falling asleep and kept waking up in cold sweats.

Tuesday was pretty hellish to say the least. I woke up feeling pretty awful, went downstairs to have breakfast but was doubled over with the most painful abdominal cramps I’ve ever experienced. After a lot of tears I called the Pain Clinic, but had to leave a message asking for urgent advice. I wasn’t able to keep even fluids inside me and couldn’t walk properly, so my Mum got an urgent phone appointment with my GP. She said I should try and persevere with the Tapentadol (a new pain medication I had recently started, which is what we believed to be causing my symptoms), but if it was getting too bad then I should change back to the Tramadol. I got rapidly worse as the day went on and the abdominal pain, sickness etc. just seemed to be getting worse. So my Dad rang every number we could find to get through to the Pain Clinic and thankfully the third number we tried was answered by a secretary. We knew they didn’t do emergency cover, but it was our last resort before going to A&E, and as silly as it sounds I wasn’t well enough to cope with A&E. Everyone at the Pain Clinic had gone home apart from one consultant, who very kindly rang me at about 5.30pm. After hearing what was happening, he told me to stop taking the Tapentadol immediately because I was having a serious reaction to it and if I continued to take it, it could potentially be fatal. I’m so glad that I had my parents fighting for me. There were a lot more tears that evening – I’ve been really low and scared about my health anyway, and this very nearly tipped me over the edge. But little Freddie looked after me – every time I cried he came and licked my face, and lay by my stomach when the pain was bad.

On Wednesday I woke up still not feeling brilliant, but knew it would take a few days to get the Tapentadol out of my system. I had a phone call from one of the Pain Clinic nurses to check how I was doing and to confirm I could go straight back on my Tramadol. I had a very quiet day, as I was still getting some of the abdominal cramps (though not as bad as the previous day) and was very wiped out. I also had a lot of pain in my kidneys, which needed to be kept an eye on. I did have a call from someone at Mind, as I was helping them with an article for their latest magazine. Apart from that though, I mainly dozed and watched some TV/YouTube videos. I managed to keep a Fortisip and some bland food down, which was good. I also received this lovely card from a friend, which came at just the right time.

Thursday was another fairly quiet day, as I was still feeling very drained. I spent the morning dozing on the sofa and watching some TV. In the afternoon I watched some YouTube videos and caught up on some of my blog e-mails. My friends, Helen and Sam, came over in the evening to sit with me for a bit, which was so lovely of them and I really needed it. Helen gave me this cute card from her daughter, Lexi, which really made me smile.

On Friday I had a phone appointment with my Gastro Professor first thing, which I was quite nervous about but it went OK. He thinks we might be missing something so is having a think, but he believes I’m still having trouble with bacterial overgrowth in my small bowel (SIBO), so will write to my GP about taking strong antibiotics whenever my symptoms flare up. He also thinks some of my pain is coming from trapped nerves in my abdominal wall, so wants me to have injections into my tummy. He asked if I’d heard of Bear Grylls (which I have) and said he was referring me to one of his survival courses, as they’re meant to be good for people with EDS. I had him on speakerphone and my Mum and I looked at each other in surprise, but then he started laughing and said he was joking – I love how down to earth he is! He did recommend Bear’s new book though, as he said a really good nutritionist writes it, which may be helpful for me. My Mum then took me over to our local hospital to have an ECG, as the machine at my GP surgery is currently being fixed. I rested at home for a while and watched a bit of Family Guy. My Mum and I then popped to the chemist and Waitrose – I had a small gift card for Waitrose, so decided to treat myself to some pretty tulips.

On the Saturday, my Mum and I went over to Tesco to do a bit of shopping. I picked up a couple of magazines, as I’m trying to find a health and wellbeing magazine to read that isn’t focused on losing weight. I also managed to get the Bear Grylls book that the Professor recommended and one of the new PG Tips teas to add to my collection. After our shopping, we headed next door to Next and met my brother, David, for lunch in Costa, which was nice. David had to go off somewhere after lunch, but my Mum and I had a browse round Next at the clothes, as I still had a voucher from Christmas. When we got home David was there, so my Mum and I helped him do a bit of tidying in his bedroom (well, I supervised!) as he’s gradually trying to clear it now he’s moved out.

Right, onto the week just gone! On Sunday my Mum took me for my second dress fitting for both bridesmaid dresses. On our way home we popped into town, as I’m looking for some new trainers. Unfortunately I didn’t find any – they seemed to have loads for men but hardly any women’s (not that I mind wearing men’s trainers, but I want pretty ones!) so I’m going to look online. I spent the afternoon watching YouTube videos and doing some admin on my laptop. We all went out for a family dinner in the evening to celebrate my sister, Rosiie’s, birthday. When we got home we did her cake and candles (red velvet cupcakes made by my Mum and I) and watched her open her presents.

Monday was a fairly quiet day, which was nice although I felt very low and flat. I spent most of the morning editing a video on my computer, but didn’t quite get it finished. I had a reflexology session, which was just what I needed and so relaxing. In the afternoon I popped to Waitrose with my Mum, just to get out of the house for a few minutes, as we didn’t need much. We then came home and watched The Soap Awards that we had on record. This little chap barely left my side all day, which is cute, although he gradually wiggles and pushes me out of my seat!

Tuesday was another fairly quiet day, which was good, as I wasn’t feeling too good and just seemed to be absolutely exhausted. In the morning I did some more Hen Do planning, and then rested for a while watching YouTube videos with Freddie snuggled up on my lap. My Mum needed to pop to Waitrose, so I tagged along and treated myself to the Good Housekeeping magazine. I think I might be a bit younger than their target audience, but I really enjoy it! When we got home my Mum helped me with some Hen Do preparations, then I settled down with a cup of tea and some rubbish TV. Despite being the last day of May, the weather was actually more like the middle of winter!

On Wednesday I had to be up fairly early for a hospital appointment. My Mum came with me to see my Rheumatologist, who is really lovely. She was concerned that my health has deteriorated since our last appointment, so I had a load of bloods taken to check if there’s anything else going on that we’re not aware of. She thinks the pain injections are a good idea and is going to talk to my Pain Doctor about the possibility of using pain patches to try and control my pain. She’s also going to try referring me for inpatient treatment at Stanmore again; on the off chance they open their waiting list soon. If they don’t, then she said I’d have a copy of the referral, which my GP can resend as soon as they open. I came home and spent some time editing a video and writing a blog post. My Mum bought these beautiful flowers in Waitrose, which made me smile.

On Thursday my Dad and I headed over to Costco to get a few bits and bobs for the Hen Do. We were very tempted by the Krispy Kreme doughnuts, especially as I’m desperate to try the new Nutella one (not that I should be eating them!) but we were good and managed to resist! I came home and rested for a while, as I was feeling absolutely exhausted. My friend, Sarah, was back home for the week, so I went over the road after lunch to see her. We spent the afternoon just chilling out and chatting, which was really lovely. When I came back home I found I had some post, which included my Veronica Dearly box for this month.

I woke up a lot later than I’d planned on Friday morning, and didn’t feel particularly great all day. I don’t know if it’s a bug or something, but my energy levels are really low and I keep feeling sort of fluey. However, I had a list of jobs that needed doing so had to push myself to keep going. I did some bits on my computer in the morning, although ended up curled up with my head in my hands because nothing was working or going right! Alfie was snuggled up next to me, fast asleep, and just looked so cute. After lunch, my Mum and I had to pop to our local florist and we also dropped into Next so my Mum could pick up something she’d ordered. When we came home I did some last minute Hen Do preparation.

Yesterday was Hen Do day! After months of planning it was finally here! The weather wasn’t great, but it didn’t rain and wasn’t too cold, which was the main thing. I went over to Emma’s parents house in the morning to help her sister set everything up, then everyone arrived around midday. It was a Disney themed garden party, so we all wore Minnie Mouse ears and Emma had a special pair with a veil. We spent the afternoon eating, making cocktails and playing various games. It was a lot of fun and despite feeling absolutely shattered I think it went well. Once I’ve edited the photos from my camera I might do a separate post about it in case you’re looking for party ideas, so keep your eyes peeled!

If you haven’t read my blog before, I just wanted to let you know that I have a second blog, which mainly focuses on my health in more depth than I talk about it here. Sunday Snippets - 22nd May 2016

Thankfully this week has been a lot less crazy than the last few weeks, which I definitely needed as my body is struggling to keep up. Unfortunately I haven’t felt particularly well, and have been having a lot of trouble with pain, as well as my mental health, so it’s not been the easiest of weeks. But I’ve been trying to pace myself a little better, at the same time as trying to catch up with e-mails, letters, Facebook messages, blogging, YouTube and everything else that needs doing! At the moment it just seems that no matter how much I try to catch up and get on top of things, the list of what I need to do never gets any shorter!

Last Sunday I had a bit of a lie-in after not sleeping particularly well, which seems to be a regular occurrence these days for some reason. I spent the morning seeing my friend, Sarah, again and giving her her birthday presents. It was lovely to catch up, as we don’t get to see each other that often now that we live in different counties. I came back home, did my medications for the week ahead (which seemed to take forever!) and played with the dogs in the garden a bit. I spent most of the afternoon blogging, which took longer than usual as I got distracted by a TV programme about elephants, which was pretty awesome but also really sad seeing how many of them get killed for their ivory. I spent my evening watching The Queen’s 90th Birthday party celebrations on TV.

On Monday I woke up with a splitting headache and in a lot of pain, which wasn’t much fun. According to my sleep tracker I woke up at least ten times during the night, so it’s not really surprising that I felt rubbish! I did manage to do a bit of tidying in my bedroom during the morning in between crying because of the pain. It doesn’t look massively different, but I keep reminding myself that every little helps. Around lunchtime my Mum and I popped over to my brother’s fiancé’s Mum’s house to do a bit of planning. How cute is this notebook from Veronica Dearly! We came home early afternoon, and I had planned on doing some work but ended up falling asleep on the sofa for most of the afternoon.

I had a fairly chilled out Tuesday, which was lovely. In the morning my Mum took me to my friend, Katy’s, house and I had a back massage. It was desperately needed as my neck and shoulders especially are so tight and painful – I just wish it lasted longer and I could have them more often! I came home and fell asleep, which definitely wasn’t what I had planned. My afternoon was pretty quiet – I just spent it trying to catch up with some messages and e-mails. I popped to Waitrose with my Mum to get a few bits for dinner and also picked up a prescription from the chemist. I made sure I gave this little lady lots of cuddles when we got home, as it was her 6th birthday.

On Wednesday I had absolutely no plans, which was a lovely feeling. I had planned to get up a bit earlier than usual, but obviously my body had other ideas because I ended up sleeping until quite late. I had a very slow morning just pottering around, and it seemed to take me ages to get myself up and dressed. I spent quite a few hours editing photos and then writing and uploading a blog post, which I was pleased to get done. I opened this lovely note and bracelet from my friend, Lissa, which really brightened my day.

Thursday brought with it an early start for a hospital appointment, although apparently I didn’t get up early enough! The traffic was absolutely awful, so I ended up being a little bit late, but thankfully not too late to be seen. I saw my Neurologist, who said he couldn’t be certain whether I’m having seizures at night and we’ve basically got to wait and see if another seizure is witnessed in the future. He doesn’t agree with what the Pain Doctor has prescribed me and thinks I should try Gabapentin. I’m really not happy to though, after the experience I had with Pregabalin. I’m seeing him again in August, but I just don’t know what to do at the moment. I’m getting conflicting advice from so many different doctors and it’s just impossible to know who to listen to. We came home and I ended up sleeping until lunchtime. I hate feeling so lazy and unproductive, but I just feel so rubbish at the moment. In the afternoon I caught up on a whole load of YouTube videos and also went through all my blogging e-mails that have built up. Freddie fell asleep on the back of the sofa while he was sitting there waiting for my sister to get home, and he just looked so cute!

On Friday I woke up with no real plans, so was just going to have a quiet day doing odd jobs. But I desperately needed some new bras, so my Mum said she would take me over to Marks and Spencer, as they had a money off event happening. We had a browse around and I chose some that I liked the look of, before getting measured to check I was getting the right size (which I wasn’t). We also popped next door to Tesco, as I needed to get something for the hen party in a couple of weeks – thankfully they had exactly what I was looking for! We came home and I dozed on the sofa for a while. I then rang the DVLA and they’re still waiting to hear from my neurologist to say I can drive again, so I’ve asked them to send him the form again, as he said he hasn’t received anything. I spent the afternoon watching YouTube videos and browsing the Internet for ideas for my sister’s birthday. As the weather was nice I went and sat out in the garden for a little while to watch the dogs play.

I didn’t have a great night on Friday night, as I was upset after hearing that a friend I made in hospital a few years ago has passed away. So I ended up waking up quite late on Saturday morning feeling pretty crappy. My pain levels were really high as well, so I spent most of the morning just trying to get myself up and dressed. I eventually managed to edit some photos and write and upload a blog post, which I’ve wanted to get up for a while. After resting for a bit, I went to the chemist with my Mum to get my new pain medication, and we popped into Waitrose as well. When I got home I opened some post, which included these new Nivea products I’ve been sent to blog about, so I’m excited to try them! Keep your eyes peeled for a blog post about them soon!
