In my life this week…

New diagnosis

This week was a pretty big one for me, as I had an important appointment with a rheumatologist at my local hospital. After 25 years of being told I’m an attention seeker and that my symptoms are purely psychological I finally found a doctor who took me seriously. After lots of questions and a thorough examination I was diagnosed with Benign Joint Hypermobility Syndrome, which, after reading up about it, seems to be used interchangeably with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Type 3. I’m being referred for specialised physiotherapy and have been given management tips for things like what I can and can’t do, eating little and often and things to look out for. Although the diagnosis is a bit scary, in that I know I can never recover from this and there is a likelihood it will gradually get worse, I actually feel really positive about this. Finally I have some answers as to why I am the way I am, and I can now learn to accept this and manage my symptoms as best I can. On the way home from the hospital we popped into Home Sense and I picked up this crochet book to see if it can help me learn more stitches and get started on a project.

Books

I’m hugely into reading; always have been and probably always will be. I can’t remember a time when I haven’t had a book on the go, and even when I was younger one of my favourite things to do was to go to Waterstones and choose a new book. Back then, one of my favourite series of books was Animal Ark (anyone else remember them?!) and now I tend to like genres like chick lit, romance, comedy, real life and crime. Just recently I’ve been very lucky, as a few friends have sent me books to read, so my bookshelf is currently looking nice and full of stories just waiting for me to read them.

IKEA

I have something to admit. Until recently I had never been to IKEA! Then, a couple of years ago, I joined my Dad on a trip to the one in Southampton and totally got what all the fuss was about. Over the last few weeks we’ve been decorating my bedroom, so I needed some new furniture to finish it off. Yesterday I got up nice and early, and my Dad and I made the trek to Southampton in time for breakfast in the cafĂ© (if you do this you have to try the almond croissants – amazing!) After a yummy breakfast my Dad wheeled me round the store and I chose a desk, filing cabinet, bookshelves and some photo frames for a new project I’m working on. I’m now incredibly excited for it to all be assembled and put into place in my newly decorated room.

What has grabbed your attention this week? I love hearing about people’s new discoveries and you may end up sharing something that makes it onto my list next week!

    1. Thank you Sophiia, yeah it feels like such a relief to understand what's been making me feel so ill the last 25 years! The top is from ASOS - it has Mickey Mouse on it a bit further down and I think it was in the sale if I remember rightly so you might be able to snap up a bargain! xx
